Myougi-San, November 2nd, 2003

Our third trip to spectacular Myougi mountain in Gunma Prefecture was blessed with glorious sunshine streaming through the autumn leaves and scorching the rockfaces. As well as a distinctive skyline, Myougi-san is blessed with two very picturesque shrines (one at each end of the trail) lots of interesting trees, some awesome rock formations including a couple of natural rock arches through with the trail climbs (with chains to hold on to in places) and even a troop of monkeys, which followed us along the path for several minutes.

The experience culminates in a very comfortable hot-spring resort with views of the plain below. It takes about three hours from Tokyo to Shin Machida, although it is possible to take the shinkansen as far as Takasaki. With five people it was economical to take a taxi from the station to the foot of the trail, which is only ten minutes or so.
