Nihon Minka-En, December 2003

The third Friends of Photography trip, run by Andy Barker, met at Mukogaoka-Yuen station at noon on December 14th, 2003. The sky was a typical Japanese winter blue, and the air was crystal clear. I had got a perfect view of Mt. Fuji from the train even from Tokyo. The hard light brought out glorious textures and warm reds and golds in the hay and wood surfaces of the park. My suggestion that we walk through the park and work back toward the entrance rather than risk getting sidetracked by the first few houses and missing the best part of the park proved to be a mistake as the sun moved around and when we finally made it back to the first part of the park much of it was in shadow. In fact, the whole day was an exercise in dodging shadows and excessively contrasty compositions. It was very instructive to see subjects changing drastically as the sun moved. Here are my best shots of the day. My fellow photographers might also like to see the also rans and the shots that came out badly, with my comments, here.
