FPTP or AV? A Third Way...By Clark Nida |
Instead of voting for the next regime to govern us, why don’t we pick the party we least want to see in power?
It won’t make politics any less dirty; it certainly won’t put an end to mud-slinging; but it will more accurately reflect the people’s will and enshrine the way our parliamentary system is really perceived.
I call my proposal FITB (First In The Bin). It shares AV’s attraction of stopping politicians drifting into office (as happened at the last election) whom 65% of voters manifestly didn’t want. But it’s a lot less intricate than AV and won’t hurt our tiny minds to think about it.
Better still, knowing that he’s only been allowed to take charge because he was merely not the worst candidate in most people’s eyes might discourage the new PM from pretending he has a public mandate for tearing down our cherished institutions.
