False economy - or dysfunctional economy?

By Clark Nida

There’s an old saying: save on food: pay out on the doctor. You could also say: save on social justice: pay out on the police.

And what if you’ve also been saving on the police? Might you find yourself paying out on the army?

And what if you simultaneously try saving on the army? It doesn’t bear thinking about. Mind you, the army could survive better on its crust of bread if we weren’t committed to fighting so many aggressive wars abroad.

Not that the army can be commended as a medicine for social injustice, if the experience of Syria and Bahrain is anything to go by.

I’ve had this blog gathering dust on my hard-drive for over a week now. But it seem events have caught me up. Hope the government enjoys its holiday. It’s going to come back to a full in-tray.
