Best thing out of Scarborough: last bus to Whitby?

By Clark Nida

My day to go into Scarborough to CAB. Not looking forward to the awful bus ride, in cramped smelly conditions, in which I often have to stand. There’s a rumour Arriva have offered £25,000 to Whitby Town Council, and nobody knows why.

To save their star-crossed franchise?

I guess they’ll argue that it’s hard to run a satisfactory service through the narrow winding lanes of the North York Moors. Certainly they make heavy weather of it, in buses straight out of the 1950s, usually unheated, that often break down.

But Coastliner is able to run lovely comfortable buses right across the National Park, so why can’t Arriva, a far bigger company?

Looks sunny out, like yesterday. Beautiful day, lovely sunset. I had the best walk I’d had in ages. Whitby looked achingly beautiful from the East Pier. And then you’d turn around and see the nearly-full moon suspended in a cloudless gloaming over a wild sea.
